CVNHP Sites

In 2006, the U.S. Congress established the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership (CVNHP). This national heritage area was designated to preserve, protect, and interpret the historical, cultural, and recreational resources of the Champlain Valley. It also works to enhance the tourism economy and encourage partnerships among state/provincial and local governments and nonprofit organizations in New York, Québec, and Vermont.

The CVNHP is nestled between the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains and stretches south to the Mohawk River and north to the communities along the Richelieu River in Québec. Most of the CVNHP is located within the Lake Champlain Basin, but the Partnership area also includes Bennington (Vermont) and Saratoga (New York) Counties, outside the Basin to the south. The CVNHP includes the interconnected waterways of Lake Champlain, Lake George, the Champlain Canal and portions of the Upper Hudson River.

The many stories of the region’s heritage are told in the museums, historic sites and natural areas throughout the CVNHP, including high-profile destinations such as the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Saratoga National Historical Park, and Shelburne Museum. Scores of smaller museums, historic sites, and parks complement these destinations, providing visitors with an intimate understanding of the region’s history.
